If you were born on December 22, your zodiac sign is usually Capricorn. In some birth years, though, the Sun did not move into Capricorn until partway through Dec 22, so people born early that day can be Sagittarius.

Dec 22 sits right on the winter solstice, the turning point between the two signs. That makes it one of the trickiest birthdays in the zodiac. Here is how to work out your sign, and what each answer means.

Why December 22 is a cusp birthday

In Western astrology, Capricorn begins at the December solstice, the moment the Sun reaches its lowest point in the Northern Hemisphere sky. The solstice does not land at the same time every year. It shifts by about six hours each year, then jumps back after each leap year.

Looking at the years from 1960 to 2026, the Sun entered Capricorn on Dec 21 in about half of them and on Dec 22 (in UTC, or world time) in the other half. Your local time zone changes the picture again:

  • In the Americas, a solstice early on Dec 22 in UTC is still the evening of Dec 21 locally. So most Dec 22 birthdays in the US, Canada and Latin America are Capricorn.
  • In India, Europe and Asia, the solstice more often falls during Dec 22 local time. So in some years, a Dec 22 baby born in the morning is Sagittarius and one born in the evening is Capricorn.

Years where the switch happened late in Dec 22 (UTC) include 1963, 1967, 1971, 1975 and 1979. In those years, an early Dec 22 birth almost anywhere could still be Sagittarius.

How to check your Dec 22 sign

You need three things: your birth year, your birth time and your birth place. With those, compare your birth moment against the exact moment the Sun entered Capricorn that year.

The easy way is a free birth chart. It does the math for your exact date, time and place, and shows your Sun sign plainly. It also shows your Moon and rising signs, which often explain why you feel like a mix of both signs.

If you do not know your birth time, you can still get close. If the solstice in your birth year fell on Dec 21 in your time zone, you are a Capricorn regardless of the hour.

If you are a December 22 Capricorn

Most Dec 22 birthdays land here. Capricorn is an earth sign ruled by Saturn, the planet of structure and time. Dec 22 Capricorns are often:

  • Driven, but quietly. They make plans that span years.
  • Dependable. Friends call them when something actually needs doing.
  • Dryly funny, with a wit that takes people a minute to catch.
  • Late bloomers who seem to grow more relaxed and confident with age.

Being born at the very start of Capricorn, you may have a bit more fire than a January Capricorn. Many Dec 22 people say they have Capricorn's patience with Sagittarius's love of a big goal. Read more on the Capricorn sign page.

If you are a December 22 Sagittarius

If your chart says Sagittarius, you were born in the last moments of the sign. Sagittarius is a fire sign ruled by Jupiter, linked with adventure, honesty and big ideas.

Late-degree Sagittarians are often described as wise beyond their years. They have the restless curiosity of the sign, plus a sense that the fun needs to lead somewhere. Read more on the Sagittarius sign page.

The Sagittarius and Capricorn cusp

Astrologers who use cusps call Dec 18 to 24 the cusp of prophecy. People born here are often described as visionaries with a practical streak: they dream big and also make a spreadsheet for it.

Astrology still gives you one Sun sign, though. The cusp is a way to talk about a blend of traits, not a third sign. Your Moon, rising and other planets usually explain the blend more precisely than the date alone.

A solstice birthday

Being born on the solstice has its own meaning, apart from your sign. In the Northern Hemisphere, Dec 22 sits right next to the longest night of the year. From that point, the days start getting longer again.

Many cultures celebrate the solstice as the return of the light. A Dec 22 birthday sits right on that turn, which suits people who are good at keeping going through the dark and bringing others with them.
